Cripple Creek District Museum
Located in the oldest buildings in all of Cripple Creek, you’ll find the Cripple Creek District Museum just across the way from Double Eagle. The entire history of our quaint mountain town is housed across 5 historic buildings in this complex and the museum is one of the best things to do in Cripple Creek for any history enthusiast. It's the perfect place to explore the sprawling legacy of the “World’s Greatest Gold Camp” and browse all kinds of artifacts, rare photos, memorabilia, and more.
Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad
Across the street from the Double Eagle, you’ll find a fun, family-friendly, and historic activity at the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. This unique 4-mile round trip features an interesting, educational, and wonder-rich exploration through the dynamic history of our unique gold town. It’s a spectacular 45-minute trip full of beautiful colors, fascinating views, and special points of interest that make great photo opportunities for your family.
Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine
Get the true gold miner’s experience from the Gold Rush era at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine. It’s one for true history lovers and is located just a few miles up HWY 67 from the Double Eagle Hotel and Casino. It’s America’s only vertical shaft gold mine tour and you’ll descend 1,000 feet to view gold veins in their natural states. Tours even include a ride on the underground tram air locomotive, and you’ll even walk away with some free gold ore!
Old Homestead House Museum
Constructed in 1896 by the famous madam, Pearl DeVere, the Old Homestead House Museum was the most elegant brothel in Cripple Creek during its heyday. This museum is one of the last original buildings of this historic district and was built during Colorado’s Gold Rush. It was opened to the public in 1958 as a museum and has become a favorite destination of the area, as thousands flock to the museum from around the world every year. The Butte Theater
Just down the street from the Double Eagle, you’ll find the historic Butte Theater. Dating back to 1896, the Butte Theater is the cultural center of Cripple Creek and features a variety of live professional theatrical productions and community theater events throughout the year. With Victorian-era wallpaper, period chandeliers, and seating for 184 guests, the Butte Theater should definitely be on your list of things to do in Cripple Creek, Colorado.
Rita the Rock Planter
Have you heard of the famous sculpture artist, Thomas Dambo? He’s a very talented sculptor who specializes in giant and meticulous wooden art projects. Just a few miles south of Cripple Creek, you’ll find one of Rita the Rock Planter (also known as Rita the Troll), one of Dambo’s numerous art installations scattered across Colorado. This amazing sculpture is made up entirely of recycled wood and is absolutely worth a visit during your trip to Cripple Creek.
Ice Castles
The Ice Castles across North America are awe-inspiring and must-see winter phenomenon that “bring fairy tales to life.” Complete with ice slides, caverns, tunnels, sculptures, and more, the Ice Caves are the perfect family-friendly activity for your trip to Cripple Creek. These attractions are the newest to the area and move each year, so we’re thrilled to have the Ice Caves just a few minutes away from the Double Eagle Hotel and Casino this year!
